The History of Black History Month

Anya Smith

Black History Month is in February it's about honoring the contributions and sacrifices of African Americans who have helped shape the nation. Black History Month wouldn't even be a thing unless it wasn't for Carter G. Woodson known as the father of black history, in 1962 Carter set out to designate a time to promote and educate people about black history and culture. Woodson envisioned a week to be centered around schools teaching about black history. He designated the 2nd week of February to do this and galvanized fellow historians through the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, which he founded in 1915. Woodson's whole goal was to make the celebration of black history a serious area of study. The idea grew in acceptance in the late 1960’s. February is the month of black history because it was originally supposed to be the 2nd week of February because Lincoln and Frederick Douglass's birthdays were in that week and they both helped free slaves and get the slave moment abolished.
