Student Spotlight

This week's Student Spotlight is Brayden Brucker. Brayden is a sophomore who plays Running Back and Safety for the Hornets. He is the first person from Heyworth to be nominated for the pantagraph football player of the week. Not only was he nominated he was voted for and received player of the week with his 126 yards and two touchdown performance that led the Hornets to a 42-22 victory over the Rushville-Industry Rockets. This win made Heyworth eligible for the playoffs for the first time in 10 years and this is a huge accomplishment for this program that has struggled in the past. This performance from Brayden Brucker is not something out of the ordinary for him as he has had multiple 100+ yard rushing games along with many touchdowns. Brayden is more than just a standout player on offense as he leads the team in piranha percentage, which is a percentage of how many times you are one of the first five people to the ball on defense. He currently has a percentage of over 60% and that is on pace to beat the Hey-Hi record by 10%.

We were able to talk about this season's success with Brayden and what they have done differently this year compared to what they have done in the past. When we asked him about their success he said their reason for success was, “Sticking to the bread and butter plays like biggie and belly opened up our big 90-yarders like sweep and scissors.” This is a much more confident and prepared football team than we have seen in the past and Brayden says, “I think we can make a good run in the playoffs and make some more history in Heyworth.” There is no shortage of confidence with this football team and Brayden along with the rest of the team feels they have something special this year and could make a serious push for this year's playoffs. There are also many other super-talented athletes that we could talk about that are all key parts of Heyworth and their wing-t offense. But when it comes down to it, Brayden is one of the reasons that Heyworth is able to break off those big runs.
