Sports Rituals for Getting Ready

Chloe Clesson

Each sport and each person has their own set of superstitions when it comes to preparing for a competition. Some have their own walk-up music, while some prefer silence. Some have lucky articles of clothing or are able to flip a switch inside of them when they put on their helmet.

To explore the rituals happening here at HHS, we interviewed senior members of the HHS Football and Cheer team before their final regular season home game on Friday, October 20th.

Senior Tyler Wills said, “Before games, (he) listens to music.” This is a common response across all ages and sports, especially with the increased portability of music. Many students have opted to use Spotify to curate their own playlists or listen to their favorite artists before the game.

Senior Cooper Johnson continued this trend when he said, “We like to listen to music and hype each other up before going onto the field.” The hype ritual continues when the teams leave their locker room at home games with music playing over the loudspeakers. They also meet with their position coaches and talk about rules and assignments for the game.

Senior Ryeligh Mealey also listens to music. She said specifically that she "listens to Pitbull before games." This music is high-energy and helps to get her ready for a long night of cheering. It is with that energy that the cheerleaders can get the crowd amped up and excited during the game.

Senior Chloe Clesson echoed the job of cheerleaders helping to create a hype ritual for the crowd. She said that her, “favorite part of the game is being able to stunt for the crowd and cheer on the boys.”

Finally, senior Maddy Logue said that she, “likes to take naps before the game." Some athletes need to rest up for the emotional and physical toll before a competition.

Whatever the ritual is, we hope that these continue to create a positive impact on the overall performance and that the cheerleaders and football players can go out on top Friday night.
