Scary Stories to Tell Around a Bonfire

Telling scary stories is not just a Halloween activity, but something that is the calling card of many bonfires and sleepovers. Below, we have found four great scary stories to add to your collection so you might be able to scare your friends the next time you get the chance. Additionally, based on the content of the stories, we have made some age-appropriate recommendations to ensure all are appropriately scared!


Summary: The Vanishing Hitchhiker is about a ghost trying to find its way home from a party but it does not know that it has died a long time ago.

Recommended Ages: 9 to 13 years old.



Summary: The Deer Woman is said to sometimes be seen as a beautiful woman just off the trail or behind a bush, calling to men to come over. Deer Woman is often said to have all the features of a normal young woman, except her feet which are shaped like deer hooves, and her brown deer's eyes. However, seeing her is not the good luck charm you may think it is!

Recommended Ages: 16+.



Summary: The tale of the 7th Barn is fairly popular, but most are oblivious to the amount of truth in the legend. The setting of the story takes place somewhere around the year 1890 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, where a wealthy farmer lived with his large family. In fact, he was affluent enough to be able to build a new barn on his property each time his wife became pregnant. His life takes a turn that will shock and scare you!

Recommended Ages: 13+




Summary: The Black Dog of Newgate has been said to haunt the Newgate Prison for over 400 years, appearing before executions. According to legend, in 1596 a scholar was sent to prison for witchcraft but was killed and eaten by starving prisoners before he was given a trial.

Recommended Ages: 10+
