PSAT and SAT Prep

Lexa Parsley

Preparing for the PSAT/SAT can be a significant undertaking, but with proper planning and dedication, you can improve your scores. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you prepare effectively:

1. Understand the Test Format: Familiarize yourself with the format, structure, and timing of both the PSAT and SAT exams. Understand the types of questions asked in each section.

*Our test day is Wednesday, April 10th. Words from Lawler, Remember, the PSAT 9 is an indicator for taking dual credit courses at Heartland Community College. If a student scores high enough on the PSAT 9 math and reading sections, they will not have to take the Heartland entrance test.

The PSAT 10 will provide students with a projection for their SAT score. In addition, the PSAT 10 is another pathway for dual credit eligibility in English and Math if students have an issue with their PSAT 9 test score or Heartland entrance testing requirements.

In addition, the SAT is a nationally recognized standardized test utilized for college scholarship programs/applications. Students who score highly on the SAT will have an opportunity to become an Illinois State Scholar. Students can retake the SAT this fall at an outside institution if they want to try to score higher.

2. Take a Practice Test: Start by taking a full-length practice test to assess your strengths and weaknesses. This will help you gauge where you need to focus your study efforts.

3. Identify Weaknesses: Analyze your practice test results to identify areas where you need improvement. Focus more on those areas during your study sessions.

4. Create a Study Schedule: Develop a study schedule that allocates specific times for studying each section of the exam. Be consistent and stick to your schedule.

5. Utilize Official Study Materials: The College Board, which administers the SAT, offers official study materials such as the Official SAT Study Guide and the Official SAT Practice Tests. These materials are invaluable resources for familiarizing yourself with the test format and question types.

6. Practice, Practice, Practice: Practice is key to improving your scores. Work through practice questions regularly to build familiarity and confidence with the material.

7. Review Mistakes: When you make mistakes, take the time to understand why you got a particular question wrong. Review the relevant concepts and strategies to avoid making similar mistakes in the future.

8. Seek Additional Resources: In addition to official study materials, consider using other resources such as prep books, online courses, and tutoring services to supplement your studies.

9. Focus on Time Management: Time management is crucial on standardized tests like the SAT. Practice answering questions within the allotted time limits to ensure you can complete each section on time.

10. Improve Reading and Writing Skills: Since the SAT includes reading comprehension and writing sections, focus on improving your reading comprehension skills and writing mechanics. Read widely and practice writing essays to strengthen these skills.

11. Learn Test-Taking Strategies: Familiarize yourself with effective test-taking strategies such as process of elimination, educated guessing, and strategic skipping. These strategies can help you approach questions more efficiently.

12. Stay Calm and Confident: On test day, stay calm and confident. Trust in your preparation and remember to pace yourself throughout the exam.

13. Take Care of Yourself: Make sure to get plenty of rest the night before the test, eat a healthy breakfast, and stay hydrated. Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is essential for optimal performance.

By following these tips and dedicating yourself to consistent and focused preparation, you can improve your performance on the PSAT/SAT and increase your chances of achieving your desired scores.
