As we begin the New Year the Heyworth High School cheer team had a competition this past weekend at MT. Vernon. They had to be at the school by 6:30 for a 3-hour bus ride all for the 2-minute routine. This was the first competition of the season. The girls practiced hard and had numerous practices that lasted a couple of hours of hard dedication. They competed at 1:30 and awards were to follow. Although they didn’t get the outcome they were hoping for, their hard work and dedication this season were worth the memories and bonding they had as a team.
We interviewed (junior) Grace Braden, On what her favorite part of the competition was. She said, “My favorite part was the pep talk we had before we went on and performed.” Then asked “how she calmed her nerves and got prepared?” she said, “I was taking lots of deep breaths and telling myself that it was just a 2-minute performance.”
We then interviewed (freshman) Madi Shepherd who was an alternate this year because of an injury. We asked her “what her favorite part of the competition was” and she said, “getting ready with doing hair and Makeup.” Although she wasn’t able to compete, when asked “What was your favorite part of the routine” she said, “I think that my favorite part was the pyramid because it looked very put together and pretty.
Also, a shoutout to the Jr high cheer team. They have completed in two competitions already and are on their way to state on Wednesday, February 7th at the Peoria Civic Center. They perform around 3:50 PM. Good luck to the team!
