Coming to a stage near you, Heyworth High School's production of Once Upon a Mattress is a beloved fairy tale all about a prince longing for a princess who suits his strict and demanding mother's wishes.
This past month has been a busy time for all actors and tech students who have been putting together this musical. The tech crew are the people that run the show. Yes, you are seeing the actors and only the actors, but it is the tech crew behind the scenes that makes it happen.
For example, the sound crew are the ones that are making it so you can hear the actors and the light crew is making sure you can see the actors in good light. Our stage managers are making sure everything runs smoothly with queues and getting props on and off stage as well as big set pieces that make everything go together. This year, the tech crew includes Cadence Stanley, Haley Young, Kate Pickett, Peyton Still, Emerson Becker, Gabriel Roehrig, Sarah Verbarg, Reese Hill, Clara Papacek, Grace Stanley, Jarrod Fulcher, Lacy Gerike, Harper Lamb, Abby Kachelmass, Eva Lopez, Emma Quinton, Taylor Mammen, Dominique Martin, Ash Goggin, Olivia Oliver, and Kim Hulen.
Additionally, we would like to give special recognition to our amazing and talented senior tech kids! The students have been in at least three years of the musical. Kayla Hilderbrand is constantly working on costumes. Kayla serves as a prop master and also helps to direct the underclassmen during scene and set changes. Then, we have Alex Felan, Ari Verbarg, and Jack Dieter who work with everything from speakers to lights. Finally, we have Adria Leesman, who also does costumes and is on the move crew, making sure that every second of the show runs smoothly.
Finally, it is important to recognize the centerpiece of this year's show. She's a choreographer, a costume designer, a makeup artist, and helps to do hair. She also has been featured on stage as Fiona, Babette, and as this year's minstrel, Robin Stevens! We have seen all the work that Robin has put in the last 3 musicals since COVID. Robin is graduating this year, and I know that musicals will not be the same without her. Whether it be from a sound point because we're no longer going to have all of her amazing high notes, her kind and caring personality which helps to get the actors and tech in a good mood, or her witty remarks between scenes, Robin will be dearly missed.
Though his mother has set rules for the ideal princess the one that comes along doesn't seem to fit very well. Will she end up being able to marry Prince Dauntless by passing the test or will she be cast into the moat for the third time? Find out by coming and seeing Once Upon a Mattress at Heyworth High School on Friday, April 19th at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, April 20th at 7:00 p.m. or Sunday, April 21st at 2:00 p.m.
