Life After High School

Madison Bradley

The 2023-24 school year is coming to an end. With every ending school year a new group of seniors is graduating. As sad as that may be, it is also a happy thing. These seniors are about to start a new chapter of their lives. Whether that may be going to college, trade school, entering the military, or going straight into the workforce. This week we interviewed a variety of seniors and found out their plans after high school. We interviewed 6 seniors and found out the current plans of Nate Lopez, Jack Rutledge, Alex Maas, Maddie Hendrick, Karley Fulcher, and Akelia Brown.

Nate Lopez plans on attending Heartland and later transferring to U of I. Nate plans on pursuing a career related to structural engineering. He says his dad really helped him decide on his major and influenced where he decided to go. Nate has prepared for this college and career by talking with his advisors and finding good internships.

Jack Rutledge plans on attending college, most likely at ISU. He plans on pursuing a career related to business or something in that field. His dad inspired this career choice because his dad is also in that field. Applying to colleges and trying to get the prices down has helped him prepare for his college and career choices.

Alex Mass plans on attending college at Illinois Wesleyan. He plans on becoming a physical therapist or physician assistant. He says that attending physical therapy in his sophomore year of high school really influenced his decision to pursue this career choice. His class choices and the education he got at Heyworth High School helped prepare him for college and his career.

Maddie Hendrick plans on going to college in Texas at Carlton State University. She plans on either going into Sonography or labor and delivery. The main reason she decided to pursue this career choice was because of the high salary. She prepared for this college and career choice by following the directions that her college has given her but she doesn’t have any nursing career or background so she’s not super prepared.

Karley Fulcher plans on doing a mix of college and military by getting a naval ROTC scholarship. She plans on majoring in aerospace engineering. She said she chose this major choice because she said it has a high salary and a good financial career choice. She has been applying to colleges since her freshman and sophomore years which has really helped her prepare for her college and career choices.

Akelia Brown plans on entering the Navy as a hospital corpsman and after her time going to college for nursing most likely at ISU. She said that her brother influenced her career choice because her brother is in the military as well. She said she isn’t prepared and going with the flow as her career and future plays out.

School is nearing the end and we only have a few more events left and limited days left. There are mixed feelings about the end of the school year. Some people are ready for summer. Some are dreading their senior friends graduating. And others are trying to soak up their high school experience before it’s over. The graduating seniors will all be missed but we wish them luck for the future.
