Homecoming Week Recap

Haley Richter

This year's annual homecoming parade started at 6:30 leading off with the local police followed by the firefighters and then the Heyworth Marching Band. Each high school graduating class worked for the weeks leading up to the parade to create their class floats. The floats were based on the homecoming theme “Heyworth in Wonderland.” The final rankings were seniors in 1st place, juniors in 2nd, freshmen in 3rd, and finally sophomores in 4th place. The parade was led straight to the high school where the homecoming bonfire would officially take place.

On the evening of Wednesday, September 27th after the town had their homecoming parade they celebrated with their usual homecoming bonfire and coronation. While people had been piling in, the Heyworth band had performed a couple of songs. Once everyone had arrived, Senior Cooper Johnson lit the fire with the supervision of the fire department, and the band and cheerleaders performed the school's fight song. Afterwards, once the fight song was over the band had left and the cheerleaders led the crowd with cheers. The fire had lit up the night and added excitement to not only the football game that was going to be played Friday, September 29th against Rushville-Industry but also who was going to be crowned homecoming queen and king which was announced afterward on the football field.

Wednesday's activities concluded with the 2023 Hey-Hi homecoming coronation, which took place on the football field right after the bonfire. The homecoming court consisted of 8 different seniors who were battling for king and queen. Our queen contestants were Maura McMillian, Macie Toepke, Carsyn Langellier, and Sage Ellis. Our King contestants were Nate Lopez, Tyler Wills, Nathaniel Roehrig, and Alex Dahlhauser. Out of those 8 contestants, Maura McMillian and Alex Dahlhauser were crowned the official king and queen of 2023. Good Job to all of our contestants!

Every year, on the Friday of Homecoming Week, Heyworth puts on a pep assembly to get the school fired up for that evening's football game. This year's pep assembly was run by the Student Council, featuring the MC Jacob Hartwig. The assembly started off with the cheerleaders and the band performing the school's fight song, which was quickly followed up with the cheerleaders doing color shout, their girl dance, and then the guy-girl dance

After the cheerleaders finished their performances, the freshmen and sophomores did tug-of-war, breaking one of the tow ropes. The ropes were soon replaced and the sophomores won the second time. Then, the juniors and seniors competed in their tug-of-war to see who would face the sophomores, but they broke the second rope! This unprecedented feat of sheer class strength meant that no points could be awarded as there was no clear winner.

Even though the ropes broke, the fun didn't stop. The teachers competed in a 40-yard dash, which Mr. Garard won. The competitions continued with a new event where the students did a relay race to highlight athletes from each fall sport competing for their grade. This relay race featured a 400-yard sprint, getting football gear on, chipping a golf ball into a hula-hoop, and passing a volleyball back and forth. In this final relay, the senior class took home the victory. Finally, the cheerleaders ended the assembly by doing the graduation year shout and awarding the Class of '24 the homecoming trophy.

The Heyworth Homecoming dance started at 7:00 pm and went till 9:30 pm. The Student Council had spent the morning decorating the new gym with Alice in Wonderland-themed decorations. There was a DJ from Soundsations, a local DJ that has been featured at many of the Heyworth dances, set up in the corner of the gym and hyped everyone up. The students that attended danced the night away till their feet hurt. Towards the middle of the dance, the Student Council recognized the homecoming court once more. They announced each of the couples in the middle of the court and then they had each of them slow dance while everyone went around and watched. This was the final duty of our homecoming royalty.
