History of Valentine's Day

Chloe Clesson

Valentine's Day occurs on February 14th of every year. But we have to ask ourselves, where did these traditions come from?

Well, it's always been a mystery to the staff here at the Stinger, and after doing some research, we have found that there are at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus. Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. Valentine continued to perform marriages for younger lovers in secret. Valentine's secrets were discovered and he was put to death. After his death there were different kinds of rumors, ones like he may have been killed for helping Christians escape prisons because they were being tortured. Before Valentine’s death, he was actually the first one who had sent a “valentine's” letter which was sent to his jailer's daughter who visited him. He wrote in quote “From your Valentine” which is still used today. Valentine then became the most famous saints in England and France.
