Through the 2023-2024 school year, we have had the most students in journalism. This class has grown so much, it turned into two different class periods with between 20-25 students each hour. We have also had the most sales for yearbooks which are and we still aren’t done selling them. The goal for this year is to sell 150 yearbooks, and this year they are on pace to sell close to 200. The head teacher for journalism is Mr. Kirkton. He is a great teacher and is always giving great ideas for the yearbook. However, the students have a huge part in the actual making of the yearbook. Journalism is all hands on and each student is assigned to pick a page that they have all year to work on. All the students come together and brainstorm ideas on how we can make the yearbook better. We interviewed some students and Mr. Kirkton to tell you how great journalism is. Mr. Kirkton said, "I like teaching journalism because it allows me to see students in a different way. Students can work in a creative environment and pursue things that they are passionate about outside the typical English classroom. I also really love photography, so this blends both the writing and photography aspects. Teaching journalism helps students to master writing and can be immediately applied to life outside of high school. It is also a great model for business as we work on sales as well as design, layout, and marketing." A current journalism student Madi Shepherd said, "I like How we can be super creative, and we can use our creativity freely. Some other pros are that we can use our creativity to help do the yearbook and cons include that there would be very strict deadlines. I would recommend it because it toggles your brain. I heard it was a fun class, and used a lot of creativity." We also contacted Emily Rogers who said that the pros included freedom, creativity, and taking photos while there were no true cons.
