Heyworth Celebrates Its Veterans

At the conclusion of World War I, the world celebrated Armistice Day, signaling the signing of the peace treaty that ended the war. This continued to be celebrated on the 11th day of the 11th month as a way to honor those who sacrificed to protect those around the world. Armistice Day was later changed to Veteran's Day to honor all veterans, not just those who fought in World War I.

This year, as with previous years, Heyworth took the time to honor its local veterans with an assembly organized by the local FFA Chapter. The FFA Chapter had seniors Cameron Hanks and Jaden Baker give speeches about Veterans Day and also helped to introduce speakers and traditions associated with Veterans Day. This year, the FFA asked local veteran, Mr. Cliff Dolbeare to speak to the Heyworth students about what it meant to be a veteran. He summarized his time in the military and provided memorable and funny stories that helped to give context to what it meant to be a veteran. Mrs. Barling and Ms. Hicklin also spoke about veterans and their connections to the military. Additionally, Mrs. Barling announced the winner of the Veteran's Day Essay Contest, sophomore CC Corbly. Along with FFA members, the concert band, led by Mrs. Rackauskas performed a medley of songs that represented the different branches of the military.

In all, this is a great tradition at Heyworth and we are very lucky to be able to recognize our connections to the military in such a way.
