On Friday, October 6th, the Heyworth Hornets took on the Leroy Panthers, at the Panthers' home stadium. Leroy was the first team Heyworth has played so far that had a “perfect” season so far. Leroy’s “perfect” season is continuing after beating the Hornets. The Heyworth Hornets ended up losing to the Panthers, 40-19. Leroy has been unstoppable this year continuing their 7-0 win streak.
After interviewing Coach Garard, he said that the best moment of the whole game was when “Mr. Bockelman had an interception before halftime it kind of stopped their momentum and gave us more breathing room.” That gave them a chance to rethink the game plan, and what they will do next time they are on defense. They tried to keep the team spirit high and encourage the team to the best of their abilities. They followed through with key ideas, to help with defense and offense, and they stuck to their plan, to help stop Leroy from scoring, and to help them try to score.
This week, on Friday, October 13th, the Heyworth Hornets are going to take on the Fisher Bunnies in Fisher. So far the Bunnies have an 0-7 season, while the Hornets have a 5-2 season and are on the cusp of guaranteeing a spot in the playoffs for the first time in the last 10 years. It is with this in mind that the team is getting ready to take on Fisher and secure their spot in post-season play. After interviewing Coach Garard he said that he said that in preparing for this week, "You have to go into every week expecting your team to win.” He also stated that he hopes to learn from the mistakes of the last game and that the team sticks to what they do best. He said that his personal goal is to recognize what is going well and to stick with that in the moment.
We also had the opportunity to interview two key underclassmen who have helped elevate the HHS Football Program this year. We started with an interview with sophomore Brayden Brucker. He said he thinks we will win because as a team, they have worked their butts off throughout the summer and this season and they are ready to see that work pay off. His personal goal for this game is to be lights-out on defense. Finally, we interviewed Jarrod Fulcher. He said that he believes we will win the game Friday night because of the team's desire to fight like a dog on every down. He says that Heyworth can get the job done, as long as the entire team shows up to play. His personal goal is to make the least amount of mistakes as possible keeping missed blocks low and gap assignments made.
