Decorating Deadlines

Do you decorate for Christmas before or after Thanksgiving?

The timing of Christmas decorations is a topic up for debate among the students and staff of Heyworth High School. As Thanksgiving approaches, people are divided over the appropriate time to begin embracing the holiday spirit: before or after the turkey hits the table.

In a survey conducted at Heyworth High School, we explored the preferences of 40 students and teachers regarding the timing of Christmas decorations this year. 75% of interviewees are excited to transform their homes for the holidays at the earliest opportunity, while the remaining 25% believe in appreciating one holiday at a time, opting to decorate after the conclusion of the Thanksgiving feast.

As we explored this annual tradition, it was clear that the timing of decorating for Christmas changes from year to year. 38% of teachers interviewed shared a common custom - when they find themselves hosting family for Thanksgiving, they willingly postpone putting up Christmas decorations, to extend the fall ambiance.

Businesses have also joined the debate, with some retailers strategically selling Christmas decorations, as early as October, to cater to the early decorators. Other establishments are holding off stocking decorations until after Thanksgiving, to give each holiday its due. The village is also transforming into a winter wonderland, with Christmas lights embellishing light poles lining the main street in time for the Christmas Parade.

Beyond the numbers and despite the debate over festivities or foliage, Heyworth can unite in its shared love for the holiday season, whether it begins before or after Thanksgiving. The diversity of opinions and collective celebration during this festive time makes holidays in Heyworth that much more special.
