Sectional Basketball Excitement Buzzes through HHS

Logan Mills

The boy's basketball team took the long trip to St. Anne twice, once on Wednesday and once on Friday where they were successful. The Hornets won 80-60 against Milford on Wednesday in the regional semi-finals and then played in the regional championship vs St. Anne at St. Anne. But the Hornet fans made the 1 hour and 45-minute drive, which paid off for them. They made a home-court advantage seem as if it were a neutral site and that just shows how much pride our small town has. Heyworth won 80-69 over the St. Anne Cardinals despite one of their juniors Jordan Davis having 37 points. But the experience for Heyworth stepped up as Nick Feather had 25 points and 16 rebounds and Alex Maas had 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Hornets battled foul trouble all night so the fact they were able to get a good road win is a good sign as the postseason continues.

Next up is a better environment for the Hornets as they take on Decatur St. Teresa at Danville Community College. This environment will be better for the Hornets as despite being 0-2 on college courts, playing a neutral site game is a lot easier than playing a road game in front of a small rowdy crowd. If anyone remembers the game from last year, St. Teresa won 49-43 which ended Heyworth’s season last year. This year the Hornets have a chance to return the favor this time in a game where the winner will advance to the sectional championship. St. Teresa does return one of their best players from last year Ryheem Tyus, who has scored over 1,000 points and has played really well down the stretch. They have improved since the midpoint of the season, as they got revenge against Argenta Oreana in their regional final. This game will be over by the time this article is published so everyone will know what happens when posted.

I’m not someone who looks ahead to the next game, but if the Hornets win against St. Teresa on Tuesday, they will match up against either St. Thomas More or Lexington who the Hornets have beaten in earlier matchups this year. But just because they picked up wins in the regular season does not mean it will be the same in the postseason but regardless of who they play, it should be a close game. The Hornets were without senior Tyler Bartels against Lexington and were without 5 rotational players vs St. Thomas More, so being healthier now is a great sign for Heyworth. Both St. Thomas More and Lexington play similar styles of basketball relying on great guard play without a true traditional center. This will be one of the best games in 1A on Tuesday so for future readers hopefully you guys were able to see a great game between two similar opponents. Regardless of who we play the sectional championship on Friday will be one of the biggest games in Heyworth history in the last 10 years. They will be trying to accomplish something that hasn’t been done since the legendary 2014 team. So I know there will be a fan bus, but make sure if you are a student from Heyworth to find a ride to Danville Community College because you do not want to miss out on a chance to watch Heyworth history.

We interviewed senior athlete Nick Feather to conclude the article and we asked him what had been working so well. “We just need to keep working together and keep surviving and advancing one game at a time. We also asked him what he thought had been the main reason for his success. He said it was the way they were able to feed the ball inside and get easy buckets. This has been shown to help out a lot as the Hornets have averaged 85 points per game this postseason, which is the highest in 1A. Heyworth continues to buzz and hopefully, the whole town will be buzzing on Friday night.
