Baseball Season Updates

Keegan Gresham

This year's baseball season is off and running. They are currently 5-10 but have played some very tough competition including Peoria Notre Dame and Father Mcgivney both in doubleheaders along with several close games that were determined by just a few plays. Most teams are bigger than Heyworth as they believe playing these bigger teams will help them prepare for the postseason. This team has had a few tough conference games like against Tri-Valley by one and another tough loss against Fieldcrest that was also determined by one run. Although their record says otherwise the team is looking optimistic and hopes to finish off this week strong. They play Mt. Pulaski, Fisher, Ridgeview, and Delavin to finish out the week and two must-win conference games. Despite the rocky start to the season, it is still early and they have a lot of games left as Coach Garard said, “It's early, baseball is a hard sport to determine how well you doing wins and losses don't always show that, the team is playing hard and practicing hard and we are getting better every day.” This team has faced many challenges this year, they have the 2nd hardest schedule in Illinois at the 1A level but if this team wants to succeed and improve they are going to have to work for it if they want to meet their expectations. Coach Gerard said, “I think that for expectations to be met there's a level of responsibility that the players need them to hold themselves to.”

This year's team features seniors such as Brady Wicklander, Tyler Bartels, Tyler Wills, Cooper Johnson, and Lucas Garber and these guys have leaped forward this year, demonstrating improving leadership. This leadership is what allows teams to make a good push for the postseason. Even though their record doesn't show the team believes they are much better than the record they have, believing that they should be the ones to go far this year. Overall the whole team players, staff, and all are very confident in their talent and believe they are a great baseball team.
